Due to increased focus on security, you will need to pass a background check for most jobs working in the airport system. Candidates who have questionable areas within their background screening may find airlines an extra challenging career to pursue in the current environment.

Entry-level jobs

With little or no prior experience you can qualify for positions like bus driver or fleet services clerk. Think those jobs aren’t a big deal? Just ask the people trying to make their flight or find their cherished belongings among a sea of lookalike suitcases; they’ll tell you that the people who keep the airport running aren’t just the ones getting the planes off the ground.

After gaining some experience you can apply to become a station agent, flight attendant, mechanic and more. There are many components to a completing a successful airline travel experience, and different jobs are required at each step along the way. This creates an environment with rich opportunities for long-term career advancement all while staying within the air travel industry.

Once a year the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes a list of the most popular occupation searches conducted on its website.  In 2010 there were nearly 10 million searches using its search engine to find everything from wage data to job descriptions.  There are really two ways to interpret this data:

X marks the spot: In 2010 the most-searched term on the BLS was teacher, followed by lawyer, nurse, doctor, chef, accountant and physical therapist. While these types of jobs are always going to be around (unless robots start cooking in restaurants – which would be awesome), it does mean there is going to be a lot of competition for all of these very popular jobs now and in the future.  Keep in mind that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to get the job; you will just have to put extra effort in to distinguish yourself from the crowd.

Be creative: If you’re worried about all the competition down the line for these jobs, you might want to consider looking outside of this list for jobs, or picking a more specialized position under the same umbrella.  Say, for instance, you’ve always wanted to be a doctor; instead of being a general or family practitioner, you might consider a specialty like cardiology or anesthesiology.  Having clearly defined career goals will distinguish you amongst your peers and specialists will generally make more money.

Stick to medical: If there’s one thing the BLS search results and data do say, it’s that all signs point to medical jobs now and in the future.  Half of the 20 most-used search terms fall within the health care industry.  Couple that with the fact that growth projections for employment in the medical professions are off the charts, and you’ve got a shoe in for a successful career.  As the baby-boomer generation ages, there will continue to be an increased need for doctors, nurses and aides to care for this aging demographic.

When it comes right down to it, you’re better off doing something you’re excited about.  Whether your choice career made this list or not, taking the time and effort it takes to do a little research and educate yourself about what it will really take to get started on your path probably means you’ll be a top contender for whatever job you choose.
